In pursuit of Excellence
|

|
Our academic year has been altered to suit the needs of the local hosting of the
Soccer World Cup. The organising committee has been hard at work preparing for
this prestigious event. Our teachers are preparing our Matrics for the Final
Exam at the end of the year.
And all of this in the pursuit of excellence.
Although opinion differs over which is the world’s finest luxury car, no doubt
exists that the Rolls Royce is certainly of the world’s best. Meticulous
attention is given to producing each Rolls. The car is carefully handmade by
4,500 workers and each of the limited 2,500 units produced annually takes many
months to build. Each of the 85,000 moving parts in every car receives endless
tedious attention. Specialists even apply a doctor’s stethoscope to each engine
for eight hours to listen for faults or malfunction. Painters hand spray and rub
the coats of paint onto each vehicle. When it finally rolls off the assembly
line, it has a million mile odometer. Excellence is never an accident, it is a
choice! It is the result of high intentions, deliberate planning and much
effort. (Our students would do well to remember this!) The difference between
excellence and mediocrity is effort. Excellence can be achieved without great
resources, but never without great effort. As with the planning for the World
Cup and our own Academic Cup Final at the end of the year, let us strive for
excellence!
In our next Newsletter I’ll touch on the history of the Christian Brothers’
schools in Cape Town : St John’s Green Point, St Columbus Athlone and St Agnes
Woodstock. Until next time …… Gary Jonsson
